The sun shifted slowly, climbing the walls, the light growing brighter and brighter. Anna opened her eyes, rubbing out the previous nights sleep. She left the house, feeding the chickens and their peeping broods. Lifting her skirt, she hopped the short fence surrounding the small barn for the rest of the livestock she and her brother were able to take care of after their fathers passing and their mother’s descent into insanity.
